As Western pharmacy systematized plant remedies through the 19th century, psyllium entered the pharmacopoeias as a “mechanical” laxative — valued precisely because it bulked rather than purged, unlike the harsh stimulant preparations of the day.

Production never really left home. India grows an estimated 80 percent or more of the world’s psyllium, concentrated in Gujarat and neighboring Rajasthan, where the dry, sunny winters suit the crop. Farmers sow Plantago ovata in the cooler months; roughly 110 to 130 days later, the plants carry spikes of tiny seeds ready for harvest.
The husk is then separated from the seed — several kilograms of seed yield roughly one of husk — cleaned, milled to whole husk or powder, and exported to markets worldwide for supplements, pharmaceuticals, functional foods, and even pet care.
The crop’s cultural presence endures alongside the industry: a spoonful of isabgol in warm water or milk remains a nightly digestive ritual in many Indian households, and the gel thickens traditional drinks like falooda. The tradition never needed the trials; it kept the knowledge alive until the trials arrived.
The Modern Evidence Era
From the 1980s onward, psyllium became one of the most clinically studied fibers available, with randomized trials accumulating across bowel function, cholesterol, and blood sugar. The landmark regulatory moment came in 1998, when the US FDA authorized a heart-disease risk health claim for soluble fiber from psyllium — extending the oat-fiber claim authorized the year before, and built on trial evidence that daily psyllium lowers LDL cholesterol (PubMed).
The honest footnote most histories skip: regulators have not agreed everywhere. In Europe, EFSA — whose process rejects most submitted claims — has authorized fiber claims for oat and barley beta-glucan and others, but no psyllium-specific claim has been authorized through its system.
